Letters to Juliet

I watched a movie the other night called "Letters to Juliet". It is loosely based on a historic site in Verona Italy where people used to leave notes at Juliet's tomb back since the 19th century and later posted letters to Juliet from the 1930's onwards of their troubles and ask for advice. Eight years ago the "secretaries to Juliet" were set up where a group of women in various specialties would respond to these notes/letters. I found it fascinating that people still find comfort in writing to complete strangers of their thoughts and feelings even if no one ever reads it or responds to it. Some what like keeping a blog.

In this movie a letter was found 50 years later and was responded to. This lady named Claire came back to the place where it all began to find out what had happened to her long lost love that she left behind so that she could finally have closure. At the end of the movie the response letter was read out and I found it quite touching and it goes like this...

Dear Claire,

'What' and 'If' are two words as non-threatening as two words can be. But put them side by side and they have the power to haunt you for the rest of your life. "What If" "What If" "What If". I don't know how your story ended but if what you felt then is true love, then it's never too late. If it was true then, then why wouldn't it be true now. You need only the courage to follow your heart.

I don't know what a love like Juliet's feels like. Love to leave loved ones for, love to cross oceans for. But I'd like to believe that if I ever would feel it that I'd have the courage to cease it. And Claire, if you didn't, I hope one day that you will.

All my love,

Juliet
